OVERVIEW:

The 3A Classification is an interesting mix of small-town schools with rich histories of wrestling prowess, and some charter schools who are looking to make their mark.  The current king of 3A is Juab, a team that has traditionally been solid, with an intense rivalry in the past with Millard when both were 2A. They have found their stride with an ol’ Delta boy as their coach and built a powerhouse.  Delta is still there, though they are currently not as good as they once were, it’s hard to argue with 34 State titles.  Could they be as good once as they ever were?  South Summit is solid, Emery is experiencing a surge that they will look to continue.  Morgan is solid and will contend in the future.  Mix in with those schools, Summit Academy and ALA, two teams who are looking to build something to rival the traditions of the past.  There should be a lot of fireworks and rowdy fans on Saturday as these teams face off.

Story lines to watch:

120:  The semis and some of the quarters at 120 will be fun to watch.  You have a bunch of guys who can score, and a mindset to put points on the board.  Look for some fun matches. Can Jorgenson get #3 or does Caldwell win one?  Could Byron Christiansen step up big for the Spartans or does Freshman Phenom Channing Warner take his first step toward 4-Time glory?

195:  This weight has more byes than any other in the UHSAA.  Someone, please explain how Division B only got 4 kids out at this weight.

Doc Holman is looking for his third straight Gold Trophy.  His dad won 9 straight, could he do the same?

Could someone outplace Delta for second?  It will be a tall task and require a tough Rabbit team to stumble.  I don’t see it happening, but if it does, look for the Spartans or Eagles to take advantage and steal a trophy.

Team Projections:

Juab is just too strong.  3A is set up so that only one wrestler scores.  Nothing like what happened in 5A last year can happen in 3A.  Regardless, Juab is both the best team with the most studs; they are also this year’s deepest team, qualifying 20 kids to State.  Emery and Delta have 18.
