The Sun Devils are coming to Orem to dual against our home state Wolverines on Thursday, January 21st at 7:30pm on UVU campus in the PE Building. Arizona State recently got a new coach in Zeke Jones and the program has taken huge steps in the right direction including knocking off #14 Iowa State this past weekend. Zeke Jones is in his second year as the head coach after being the United States Freestyle Head Coach. This past year Arizona State had the #1 recruiting class in the country. The Sun Devils are led by their #8 ranked 184lber in Blake Stauffer while the Wolverine are led by #19 ranked 125lber in Chasen Tolbert.  Here is a weight by weight look into the UVU vs. ASU dual meet.

125lbs: #18 Chasen Tolbert (UVU) vs. Ares Carpio (7-10) or Mikel Perales (2-8)

  • Chasen Tolbert will come into the match as the heavy favorite. Carpio is the senior while Perales is a freshman but either way UVU will be looking to score bonus points here.
  • Advantage: UVU

133lbs: Jade Rauser (UVU) vs. Cord Coronado (1-6) or Tyree Owens (0-1)

  • Again UVU will be the heavy favorite at 133lbs. Both Coronado and Owens are seniors but both have struggled this year. Rauser was just named the Big 12 wrestler of the week after defeating both Stanford and CSU Bakersfield this past weekend.
  • Advantage: UVU

141lbs: Jared Maynes (UVU) or Trevor Wilson (UVU) vs. Robbie Mathers (15-9)

  • This could be a crucial match for both sides as Arizona State's Robbie Mathers comes to us as a sophomore who initially signed with UVU coming out of high school. Maynes or Wilson will be stepping up to look for the win against Mathers. This could be one of the more fun matches of the dual.
  • Advantage: ASU

149lbs: Matthew Ontiveras (UVU) vs. #15 Matt Kraus (17-5) or Christian Pagdilao (4-2)

  • Arizona State's Matt Kraus will be the favorite but don't count out Ontiveras. Ontiveras was seconds away from defeating #18 Geordan Martinez in the BSU dual so he has the potential to compete with Kraus. If Arizona State elects to put in Pagdilao over Kraus then UVU could be favored but I expect to see Kraus in the line up.
  • Advantage: ASU

157lbs: Raider Lofthouse (UVU) vs. Oliver Pierce (15-11)

  • Lofthouse and Pierce met once already this year with Lofthouse coming out with the victory but it was a close match. Pierce will be out for revenge but Lofthouse will come with confidence against the sophomore from Arizona.
  • Advantage: UVU

165lbs: Brayden Humpherys (UVU) or Dalton Harmon (UVU) vs. Jacen Petersen (7-10)

  • Petersen has struggled a bit this year but is young, only a sophomore.  UVU is also young at this weight so this could be a tight match but the edge goes to ASU's Jacen Petersen.
  • Advantage: ASU

174lbs: Ross Taylor (UVU) vs. Anthony Anderson (1-2)

  • Ross Taylor is one of UVU's veterans and should come out on top against Anderson. Anderson is a freshman with little experience but he will put up a fight against the older Taylor.
  • Advantage: UVU

184lbs: Will Sumner (UVU) vs. #8 Blake Stauffer (11-2)

  • ASU will be looking for one thing at 184lbs and that is bonus points. Stauffer comes to UVU as the #8 ranked wrestler in the country and anything less than bonus points will be a win for UVU.
  • Advantage: ASU

197lbs: Derek Thomas (UVU) or Aryton Almberg (UVU) vs. Josh DaSilveira (11-6)

  • Aryton has wrestled the last few matches for UVU and depending on if he is in or if Thomas is in depends on who is favored. ASU is a senior at this weight and a solid wrestler.
  • Advantage: ASU

285lbs: Dustin Dennison (UVU) or Jordan Karst (UVU) vs. #10 Tanner Hall (17-7) or Sully Cauley (0-0)

  • ASU has two wrestlers listed but I only expect to see one compete and that is Tanner Hall. Tanner Hall is a true freshman fresh off an LDS mission but has taken the nation by storm defeating many highly ranked opponents. Dennison and Karst are very capable of pulling the upset and UVU may need them to step up big!
  • Advantage: ASU

Key matches: Below are the two matches that will be key to winning the dual. Of course, bonus points and upsets will be key in the other matches but the team that wins these two matches may just win the dual.

  • 141: Maynes or Wilson vs. Robbie Mathers
  • 157: Raider Lofthouse vs. Oliver Pierce

Overall summary/keys to victory: UVU will have their hands full but if the dual starts at 125lbs and UVU can reel off bonus point victories at both 125 and 133 and then pick up the two "key matches" at 141 and 157 UVU could be in a great position. The momentum will be in their favor and might be enough to help them pull off an upset in the upper weights and steal the dual victory. Arizona State will look to win the matches they are supposed to and if they do that they should leave town with the win.
