On Wednesday the 16th of December, the #1 ranked team in the state and returning 4A state champs will do battle with the 4A returning state runner-ups and #3 team in the state, Maple Mountain. We will be streaming this dual live via trackcast for all to see. There will be many highly anticipated individual matches as well so you won't want to miss this dual!! The match starts at 7pm on Wednesday at Maple Mountain High School. We have broken this dual down weight by weight and it looks like a good one!!

*Individual rankings reflect the Beehive Top 25 rankings

*team rankings reflect all class rankings

106: Quenton Mortimer (MM - Fr.) vs. Mitchel Slack (Wasatch - Fr.)

  • Two freshman will battle at 106lbs. Slack won the Layton JV Tournament and Mortimer will be looking to score big here for Maple Mountain
  • Advantage: Maple Mountain

113: Jaren Myrup (MM - Jr.) vs. Trevor Cluff (Wasatch - Jr.)

  • Cluff is a state runner-up, and 14-0 on the year, he will be highly favored in this match. Look for Mryup to try and slow the match down and keep it close
  • Advantage: Wasatch

120: Parker Gasser (MM - Fr.) vs. #9 Braiden Parker (Wasatch - Sr.)

  • Senior vs. Freshman here and the Senior is one of the best in the state. Wasatch will look for bonus here
  • Advantage: Wasatch

126: #11 Tanner Cox (MM - Sr.) vs. Zak Kohler (Wasatch - Fr.)

  • Cox is a 2x state champion and Zak Kohler is the #1 ranked freshman coming into high school. Could be fun to see if Kohler can make a run at the 2x state champion.
  • Advantage: Maple Mountain

132: Bruce Campbell (MM - Sr.) vs. #18 Corbin Smith (Wasatch - Jr.)

  • Campbell is a returning state placer but Smith is very good and if Campbell isn't careful the match could get away from him.
  • Advantage: Wasatch

138: #1 Taylor LaMont (MM - Sr.) vs. Steven Ballif (Wasatch - Jr.)

  • LaMont will be looking for pin points but Ballif won't go down easy
  • Advantage: Maple Mountain

145: Tristan Hellstrom (MM - Jr.) vs. Jakob Discher (Wasatch - Jr.)

  • Discher has one loss on the year and doesn't look to slow down tomorrow night, advantage goes to Wasatch on this one.
  • Advantage: Wasatch

152: Brandyn Van Tassell (MM - So.) vs. Nick Piscitelli (Wasatch - Sr.)

  • Piscitelli placed 5th at Layton and only 3 losses on the year. Van Tassell is only a sophomore but very tough.
  • Advantage: Maple Mountain

160: Parker Kay (MM - Jr.) vs. DJ Cohen (Wasatch - So.)

  • Parker had a great win over Tomlinson this past weekend, can he find another great win over Cohen?
  • Advantage: Wasatch

170: Kolby Smith (MM - Sr.) vs. Ritchie Heywood (Wasatch - Jr.)

  • Big bonus points for Wasatch here if Heywood puts the pressure on. If Maple Mountains wants to pull the upset they need to be clicking on all cylinders and that includes Smith.
  • Advantage: Wasatch

182: Cory Rokovitz (MM - Sr.) vs. Garth Healey (Wasatch - Sr.)

  • Healey is sometimes overlooked with a line up full of stars for Wasatch but don't count him out. 3rd place at Layton and only one loss on the year.....not a guarantee win for Maple Mountain
  • Advantage: Maple Mountain

195: Wade Bastian (Maple Mountain - Fr.) vs. Wayson Foy (Wasatch - Sr.)

  • Freshman vs. Senior again here at 195lbs. The advantage goes to Wasatch but watch out for the upset.
  • Advantage: Wasatch

220: Korbon Tibbals (MM - Sr.) vs. Wylder Smith (Wasatch - So.)

  • Tibbals will be looking for a fall as one of the top 220lbers in the state.
  • Advantage: Maple Mountain

285: Brad King (MM) vs. Ben Bos (Wasatch - Sr.)

  • Very interesting match up here at heavyweight. This could be exciting if the dual comes down to this match. King was an unknown to start the season and has since knocked off some top heavyweights. Bos was the clear #1 heavyweight coming into the season but got knocked off by the Jordan heavyweight at Layton but has since dominated.
  • Advantage: Wasatch

Key matches: Below are the three matches we feel are key in deciding the outcome of the dual.

  • 160: Parker Kay vs. DJ Cohen
  • 195: Wade Bastian vs. Wayson Foy
  • 285: Brad King vs. Ben Bos

Overall summary/keys to victory: We have Wasatch favored in 8 of the 14 matches and Maple Mountain favored in 6 of the matches. For Wasatch to win they need to just do what they are expected to do; come out and win the 8 matches and dominate where they are supposed to dominate. For Maple Mountain to pull the upset they will need to keep matches close and pull an upset somewhere. Their biggest potential for an upset will be at 195lbs since both are relatively unproven at this point. This will be fun so make sure not to miss this dual!!
