The annual Utah Valley vs. Boise State dual is always a fun dual between rivals. Each year the home team seems to come out on top. Last year was no different as Boise State edged UVU 19-18 on their home turf. This year UVU will look to get revenge on the Broncos in Orem at 4pm on Saturday at the PE building on UVU campus. Here is a weight by weight look into the UVU vs. BSU dual meet.

125lbs: Chasen Tolbert (UVU)#11 vs. Rami Haddadin (BSU) or Carson Kuhn (BSU)

  • Chase Tolbert is ranked 11th in the country and is undefeated on the year with a huge win over the previously #9 ranked wrestler in the country this past weekend. Boise State will look to take the upset at 125lbs. Boise will have either Rami or Carson take the mat. Rami has been the starter all year up to this point and has a successful season so far placing 2nd at the Cowboy open and is 6-1 on the year. Carson has yet to take the mat for the Broncos this year. Both Rami and Carson are from Utah so they will be coming back to their home state.
  • Advantage: UVU

133lbs: Jade Rauser (UVU) #16 vs. Josh Newberg (BSU)

  • Jade Rauser will look to keep UVU rolling against the sophomore from Boise. Jade is currently ranked #16 in the country while Newberg is 7-5 on the year. Rauser is dangerous on top and could get the building rocking with a bonus point victory. UVU needs a big win here to get the momentum going into a key 141 pound match.. Newberg even though only at 7-5 is a very tough wrestler and Jade will need to bring his best on Saturday.
  • Advantage: UVU

141lbs: Jared Maynes (UVU) vs. Jake Velarde (BSU) or Josh Reyes (BSU)

  • Maynes was a 133 pounder to start the season but an injury to Trevor Wilson forced Maynes to bump up a weight and Maynes has responded. Jared has been wrestling great lately at 141lbs and just had a win over Oregon State. Maynes has a gas tank that never ends which has been his saving grace. Velarde comes to us as a sophomore and is 5-5 on the year with a 6th place finish at the Cyclone Open. This is a crucial match for both teams and may indeed decide the dual. Will the gas tank of Maynes win out or will Velarde weather the storm and come out on top?
  • Advantage: BSU

149lbs: Brayden Humpherys (UVU) vs. Geordan Martinez (BSU) #19

  • Humpherys is a fighter and will give Martinez all he has. Martinez is Boise's toughest wrestler ranked #19 in the country. Humpherys will need to slow the pace down to keep the match close and give himself a chance to win. Martinez will look to score early and quick and not look back. Last year in the UVU vs. BSU dual Martinez won by fall over Derek Malan.
  • Advantage: BSU

157lbs: Raider Lofthouse (UVU) vs. Chris Castillo (BSU)

  • Castillo is one of Boise's most seasoned wrestlers coming to us as a senior. Castillo is 9-5 on the year and last year defeated Trevor Wilson at 149lbs 5-3 in the UVU vs. BSU dual. Lofthouse is looking to make a statement this dual and turn the tide in favor of the Wolverines but it won't be easy against Castillo.
  • Advantage: BSU

165lbs: Kieffer Taylor (UVU) vs. Taylor West (BSU)

  • Another one of Boise's seniors against the true freshman from Arizona Kieffer Taylor. West is 11-5 on the year and just came off a big pin that helped BSU defeat ASU this past weekend. Boise will be looking for bonus points and if they get them it may be the difference in the dual. Taylor won't go down easy though and even though a true freshman has competed very tough this year and if West isn't careful will find himself on the wrong end of the score when the match is over.
  • Advantage: BSU

174lbs: Ross Taylor (UVU) vs. Austin Dewey (BSU)

  • Taylor is one of the Wolverine leaders as a senior but Dewey is going to bring his A game on this one. This will be another pivotal match up for both teams. Dewey lost a nail biter to Ethan Smith last year in OT. He is 9-5 on the year and placed 3rd at the Cowboy Open. Ross is 3-2 on the year so far with wins over Oregon State and Rider this past weekend.
  • Advantage: Toss up

184lbs: Will Sumner (UVU) vs. Keavon Buckley (BSU)

  • These two met last year at the UVU Open with Sumner coming out on top by fall. Buckley will look to even the score with a win this year but so far is only 0-1 on the year.
  • Advantage: UVU

197lbs: Derek Thomas (UVU) #19 vs. Harley Dilulo (BSU) or Chili Sabin (BSU)

  • Derek Thomas is red hot right now coming off a major decision win over the #12 ranked wrestler in the country from Oregon State. He is a perfect 5-0 on the year and just snuck into the rankings at #19. Let's hope he stays red hot cause UVU may need some bonus points. Boise State will have one of two wrestlers taking the mat in DiLulo or Sabin.
  • Advantage: UVU

285lbs: Dustin Dennison (UVU) vs. Gaylen Edmo (BSU)

  • Here is another match that took place last year at the UVU Open where Dennison won by a score of 5-2. Edmo is 3-2 on the year.
  • Advantage: UVU

Key matches: Below are the two matches that will be key to winning the dual. Of course bonus points and upsets will be key in the other matches but the team that wins these two matches may just win the dual.

  • 141lbs - Jared Maynes vs. Jake Velarde
  • 174lbs - Ross Taylor vs. Austin Dewey

Overall summary/keys to victory: Boise State is coming off a win over Arizona State and UVU is coming off a win over #18 Oregon State. Both teams are red hot but someone has to lose. We have UVU favored in 5 matches and BSU favored in 4 matches and 1 match as a toss up. Last year's dual came down to bonus points as UVU won 6 of the 10 matches but still lost. This years dual could be the same and come down to bonus points. Boise State must find an upset somewhere and/or win the toss up match. UVU needs to win all the matches they are supposed to win and get bonus points somewhere. It will be fun and the house will be packed so make sure you don't miss this dual!!
