UVU Weight by Weight Preview: 174 & 184

The annual Utah Valley Wolverine intrasquad dual will be at 7pm on Friday the 30th on UVU campus in the PE building (volleyball gym right next to the UCCU Center). Admission is free to the event and will feature two youth featured matches as well the 2015-2016 UVU wrestling team. 

With the college wrestling season less than one week away here is an in depth weight by weight preview of the Utah Valley Wolverines as well as expected intrasquad match ups at each weight. We will be posting two weight classes per day, go Wolverines!!

174 Projected Starter: Ross Taylor (Senior)

Credentials: Started last year at UVU at 184 and went 12-15 overall

  • Challengers: none
  • Redshirts: Dalton Harmon
  • Expected Intrasquad matches
    • Ross Taylor vs. Jacob Armstrong (184)

Ross will be dropping down to 174 from 184 this year and will be starting for the Wolverines. Ross placed 6th at the Reno Tournament of Champions going 5-3 at the tournament and picked up in conference wins over Air Force and Northern Colorado. Ross will definitely be one of the leaders for the Wolverines. Dalton Harmon will be moving up to 174 this year after starting for UVU at 165 last year as a freshman. Dalton will redshirt this year and look to take over the spot next year when Ross graduates.

Abel Gomez

184 Projected Starter: Will Sumner (Freshman) or Abel Gomez (Junior)

  • Credentials: (Will Sumner) Redshirted last year, won the UVU Open and 3rd at the Battle of the Rockies.
  • Redshirts: Jacob Armstrong
  • Expected Intrasquad matches
    • Abel Gomez vs. Jacob Armstrong
    • Ross Taylor (174) vs. Jacob Armstrong

Will Sumner or Abel Gomez will be taking over the 184 pound duties with Ross Taylor moving to 174. Will is a freshman from Penn Valley, California. Sumner impressed last year during his redshirt year winning the UVU Open and taking 3rd at the Battle of the Rockies. Abel Gomez, a Junior, from Las Vegas, Nevada has seen starting time for the Wolverines that past couple of seasons and will wrestle Will Sumner for the starting spot. Jacob Armstrong from Salem, Utah will be redshirting this year. Jacob comes to us as one of the top high school recruits last year. Jacob was a 3x Utah State Champion and All-American in High School. At 184 pounds Jacob will be in the mix to start in the 2016/17 season
