UVU Weight by Weight Preview: 141 & 149

The annual Utah Valley Wolverine intrasquad dual will be at 7pm on Friday the 30th on UVU campus in the Shurian Activity Center (volleyball gym right next to the UCCU Center). Admission is free to the event and will feature two youth featured matches as well the 2015-2016 UVU wrestling team. 

With the college wrestling season less than one week away here is an in depth weight by weight preview of the Utah Valley Wolverines as well as expected intrasquad match ups at each weight. We will be posting two weight classes per day, go Wolverines!!

141 Projected Starter: Trevor Wilson (Junior) or Bracken Nipko (Junior)

  • Credentials: (Trevor Wilson) 2 year starter for UVU at 149lbs, 4th place at the WWC Championships
  • Challengers: Trevor Wilson or Bracken Nipko
  • Redshirts: Chase Call
  • Expected Intrasquad matches
    • Trevor Wilson vs. Chase Call

Trevor Wilson is making the drop down to 141 after two years of wrestling up a weight at 149. Trevor was very competitive at 149lbs and with the drop should be a contender in the Big 12 right away. Bracken is a Junior who has battled injuries the past two years after seeing some action at 125 his freshman year and will be battling Trevor for the starting spot. Chase Call was a 2x State Champion and a 4x state finalist in Idaho. He was also an All-American while in High School. This is his first year after returning home from an LDS mission.

149 Projected Starter: Brayden Humpherys (Sophomore)

  • Credentials: Redshirted last year, won the Northern Colorado Open and went 10-4
  • Challengers: none
  • Redshirts: Grant LaMont, Khristian Olivas, Matthew Ontiveras
  • Expected Intrasquad matches
    • Brayden Humpherys vs. Grant LaMont
    • Khristian Olivas vs. Matthew Ontiveras

Brayden Humpherys looks to lock down the 149 pound spot. Brayden is from Layton High School and started his college career at Colorado Mesa before transferring to UVU. Brayden redshirted last year after serving an LDS mission and looks to be in top form this year. Grant LaMont will be redshirting this year, Grant was a National Champion before coming to UVU and a 3x Utah High School State Champion. Khristian Olivas was a 2x California State placer and hails from the perennial state champions, Clovis, HS in California and will look to be in the mix of things come next year as well. Matthew Ontiveras will make the jump up to 149 this year after being the starter at 141 last year. Ontiveras will redshirt this upcoming year.
