Six Wolverines Reach Podium at Colorado Mesa Open

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Six Utah Valley University wrestlers placed at the Colorado Mesa Open in Grand Junction, Colorado, on Saturday. Sophomores Jarod Maynes (133 pounds) and Dustin Dennison (heavyweight) led the way by each recording third-place finishes in their respective weight classes while competing unattached.

Behind Maynes and Dennison's third-place outings, freshmen Matthew Ontiveros (141), Josh Temple (125, unattached) and Michael Suwyn (157, unattached) all took fourth while fellow freshman Jesse Christensen finished in fifth place while competing unattached at 174 pounds.

Both Maynes and Dennison posted 4-1 records at the tournament as they each won their first two and last two matches on Saturday. Maynes posted a fall, a major decision and two decisions en route to his placement while Dennison put up a major decision and three decisions. 

Ontiveros, who was taking part in his first collegiate tournament on Saturday, went 4-2 while Temple and Suwyn each posted 3-2 records, and Christensen finished at 2-2.

Four other Wolverines participated at the tournament and freshman Tyler Scott (125, unattached), sophomore Jared Harris (149) and redshirt freshman Aryton Almberg all went 1-2 while freshman DJ Argyle finished with an 0-2 outing while competing unattached at 157 pounds.

The majority of UVU's starters sat out the tournament in preparation of next week's opening-season dual competition.

The Wolverines will now head to Boise, Idaho, to take on both Boise State and Iowa State in dual action next Friday. UVU will then travel to Arizona the following week to take on Arizona State (Nov. 21) and Grand Canyon (Nov. 22).
