OREM, Utah - Utah Valley University associate head wrestling coach Erkin Tadzhimetov placed third over the weekend for his native country of Uzbekistan at the 2014 Canada Cup in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Tadzhimetov went 4-1 at 57 kg (125.5 lbs.) on July 5 en route to his third-place finish. Tadzhimetov won two of his bouts by technical fall, one by fall and one by decision. His lone loss was a 7-5 decision in the semis to Dillon Williams (Team Impact) who went on to place second at the tournament.

"The Canada Cup was a good stepping stone for me. It felt great to get out on the mat again and compete at the international level." said Tadzhimetov. "I was wondering how my body would respond coming into the tournament, but overall things went well and I'm looking forward to the World Championships in September."

The 2014 Canada Cup marked Tadzhimetov's first international competition in seven years.

Tony Ramos (USA), a three-time All-American and 2014 NCAA Champion from the University of Iowa, won the 57 kg weight class.

The tournament marked a tune-up for Tadzhimetov, as he will now turn his attention forward to the World Championships that will be held Sept. 8-14 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The current UVU assistant coach and former Wolverine wrestling standout will travel to his home country later this week to begin training.

Before the World Championships in September, Tadzhimetov will take part at another international tournament in Taraz, Kazakhstan in late July.
