OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The 2014 Junior National Duals are underway on the campus of Oklahoma City University, as the nation’s elite 17 and 18 year-old wrestlers compete for a National Championship and the claim to best wrestling state in the land. 

Wednesday marked the first day of the competition, beginning with the two-day Greco-Roman tournament.

Illinois entered the tournament as the favorite to win it all, and after one day of competition they have lived up to expectations. Illinois dispatched Michigan Blue 57-9 in the pool A finals to advance to the Gold/Silver pool tomorrow.

Illinois has won the previous three Junior Duals National Championships in Greco-Roman with their last loss coming in 2010 to a Wisconsin team led by 2013 Greco-Roman World Team member Jesse Thielke and 2014 NCAA Champion Alex Dieringer.

Utah won pool B in convincing fashion, taking out Iowa 50-14 in the finals dual. The Utah squad is anchored by USA Wrestling All-Americans Taylor LaMont, Kimball Bastian and Roy Nash.

Minnesota Blue cruised to a 48-17 victory over Florida in the Pool C finals in Oklahoma City. Victor Gliva and Mitchell McKee picked up key falls for Minnesota Blue in the finals dual.

Stillwater high School products Kaid Brock, Joe Smith and Chandler Rogers guided Oklahoma to a convincing 51-14 victory over a solid Maryland squad in the pool D finals. 

The top two teams in each pool advance to the Gold/Silver pool tomorrow with national title hopes still intact.

Action will resume tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. CDT with the Gold/Silver, Bronze/Copper, Red/Blue and Green/Yellow pools followed by the placement matches in each pool.
