Matt Brown

Matt Brown has been named wrestleutah.com "Athlete of the Week" for April 2nd, 2014.

Each week, wrestleutah.com will select two "Athletes of the Week." One for the PreK-9th grade age groups, and one for the high  school  and above  age group  which will include high  school , college, coaches and teams. The selection committee will consider and choose from nominees based upon performance within wrestling that week.

  Matt is a two time NCAA All American at 174 pounds. At the NCAA tournament in Oklahoma City, Marsh 20-22, 2014, he was the only Utah wrestler to earn All American honors. He finished 5th, beating Iowa All American Mike Evans 6-3 in the medal match.

 He is a key bonus point scorer for Penn State, which has won 4 straight NCAA team championships. Penn State is coached by Cael Sanderson, and Cody Sanderson is the associate head coach.

 The Sandersons recruited Matt to wrestle for them at Iowa State, where he red-shirted in 2008-09, before serving a 2 year Mormon mission in Africa. The Sandersons started coaching at Penn State in the 2010 season. Matt was re-recruited after his mission and began attending Penn State in 2011. (Matt.s parents and family are Pennsylvania natives and lifetime PSU fans.)

Matt's career record at PSU is 89-13--33-6 in his Junior season, 29-5 in his Sophomore season, and 27-2 as a Freshman.

 In 2013, he lost in the NCAA finals in overtime, 2-1 to Chris Perry of Oklahoma State, who is now a two-time NCAA Champion.

 Matt won the Big Ten title at 174 pounds in 2013.

 He is a 2 time runner-up at the prestigious Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn. where he lost in the finals to 3 time NCAA Champion and teamate Ed Ruth, he was also runner-up to Chris Perry.

 Brown is a 2 time first team Academic All American, and in 2013 won the NCAA's Elite 89 Award as the nation's top student-athlete at the NCAA wrestling championships. He is a Junior at PSU, with a dual major in crime law and justice, and International politics.

 In High School, Matt was a 3 time 4A State Champion at Cypress High School. He won the Outstanding Wrestler Award for the upper weights at 145 ponds his Senior year at the State tournament. Brown, a 2 time High School All American, finished his scholastic career with a lofty 149-4 record.

 Matt married Lauren Hemrick in August 2012.
