For many top Utah programs, the third weekend of December means taking a road trip to the 'Biggest Little City in the World' to compete in the Reno TOC. This year, Utah represented well at the event and several wrestlers hit eastbound I-80 with hardware in tow after the dust settled.
Bosh proved why he was one of the most talked about freshmen in his class coming into this season by reaching the podium. He'll get tested in the state throughout the remainder of the season, but he'll be up for the challenge.
Jacob Carson is the 126-pounder to beat in Utah and one of the best in the state. He's tough in all positions and competes as hard as anyone.
Easton Evans has had some close matches this season in the state but looks to be wrestling his best now after placing in a weight class that always has talent. For context, some great wrestlers, such as Jason Worthley, Drew Korth, and Noah Bull, missed the podium. Buckle up for the Rockwell Rumble. This weight will be wild!
Garcia adds another placement in Reno to the family mantle. He came in as the top seed, and after a loss, he showed a champion's resiliency by going and getting the next best thing which was third.
There are eight spots on the podium, and Utah dudes occupied half of them in this weight. Many of them wrestled each other, and several of them also wrestled at the Layton Invitational. With the Rumble and other in-state competition on the horizon, who will prove to be the best 157-pounder in the state?
Ethan Hearne will be making a big jump in the Power Poll after a breakout weekend against some quality competition. Can he keep that momentum through the rest of the season?
Much like at 157 pounds, 50% of podium slots were occupied by Utah guys. Going into the event, Kael Bennie was deservingly viewed as the top dog at 190 lbs after producing fantastic results at the Walsh Ironman and the Layton Invitational. However, he fell to Pleasant Grove's Trevyn Gates on the championship side of the bracket. He would go on to take third, and Gates finished in sixth. Payson's Landen Shurtleff also had a good tournament, finishing in seventh. The big story at this weight is Cayaen Smith, who won the tournament and picked up a win by fall in the finals. 6A has three of the four placers in this weight. Only one of them can win state in February. Who's it going to be?
It was a good weekend for the Smith family. Both of them came away with top-three finishes with the All-American designation attached to them. Smith has been improving every year and has emerged as one of the top wrestlers in Utah. Can he challenge the likes of Cash Henderson for the top spot in the Power Poll?
Byrd and Mumford represented themselves and our state well at heavyweight by bringing home hardware. Both of these excellent wrestlers are in the 6A classification, which makes a state finals matchup a good possibility.
