Weekend Warriors (January 8-10)

Most of the ranked action took place in Brigham City and Vernal over the weekend. The hometown teams both prevailed. At the Richardson, Box Elder outlasted Mountain Crest and Payson. Uintah was dominant at the TOC and placed ahead of Juab and Pleasant Grove.

Here’s five individual athletes who had a great weekend by picking up big wins and bringing hardware home with them.

Gabe Sanders (Mountain Crest)

Sanders is down to 145 pounds and had a great weekend at the Richardson. He majored Conway Christensen in the semifinals to set up a finals with Josh Millward. He outpointed Millward 12-6 to claim the title.

Hayes Dalton (Emery)

Dalton dominated in his preliminary bouts and met returning state champion Andrew Jensen in the finals of the TOC in Vernal. He picked up a big win by fall over Jensen and in doing so, could catapult himself into the Beehive 25.

Alex Emmer (Pleasant Grove)

I try to avoid recognizing the same wrestler in close succession with these pieces, but I would be a fool to not feature Emmer once again. This week, he picked up an overtime win over Finlinson in a dual and then didn’t surrender a point at the TOC with wins over Sanchez, Warner, and Holmes.

Tristan Farnsworth (Altamont)

Farnsworth had a great showing at the Richardson. He scored three wins by fall that included a win over 2020 state placer Corbin Platt to reach the finals. In the finals, he met returning state finalist, Terrell Lee and came out of the match with a major decision and a gold medal.

Deegan Palmer (Payson)

Palmer might be in the running for biggest upset of the weekend. He pinned his way into the finals of the Richardson where he met Waylen Pentz who is at the top of the PowerPoll and top 10 in the Beehive 25. Palmer was down by one with short time and created a scramble to score the late reversal to win.

What’s Next?

The busiest week of the season for Utah wrestling. All-Star Dual on Tuesday and the Rumble over the weekend as well as some marquee dual matchups and other tournaments such as the Layton Invitational.

Have a great week, wrestling nerds!
