Utah’s Weekend Warriors (02/12-02/15)

There was a lot of great wrestling in the 3A-6A classifications. A fantastic battle for the 5A title between Payson and Wasatch along with a pile of intriguing matchups in the other divisions. Also, Stockton O’Brien and Tyson Humphreys both became four-time state champions, congratulations to both of the future Wolverines. Now, here’s just a few other stand out performers!

Gus Harrison (Uintah)

Harrison captured a 4A state championship. To do so, he had to dig deep in the third period against defending state champion, Gabe Sanders. He was down on the scoreboard going into the period and closed the show with a reversal followed by a cross face cradle to score the fall.

Riley Helt (Pine View)

Last week Dillon Dick was recognized as a Weekend Warrior. This week, Riley Helt made the necessary adjustments and got the job done in large part with two great single leg attacks to score 4 of his 5 points and conclude a great rivalry and earn himself a state championship.

Oakley Ridge (Pleasant Grove)

Ridge has been on a long journey over the last few years. He’s battled injuries and stiff competition, but finally captured a state title. He scored a fall in the finals but was pushed to the brink by Jordan Davies in the semifinals in a wild 13-11 shootout.

Sammy Heywood (Wasatch)

Heywood’s aspirations of a third state title were nearly dashed in the semifinals by Conway Christensen. Heywood showed why he already had two state championships and rallied back to win the match 11-10. In the finals, he pinned a very tough Anthonee Ouk to win his third state title.

Jarrett Jorgensen (Morgan)

Jorgensen had a fantastic season and he’s fun to watch. He met fellow state champion, Lukas Carrillo in the 3A finals and looked to be well in control of the match entering the third. Carrillo clawed his way back into the match with a throw on the edge to nearly end the match. Jorgensen fought off his back and was back on the offensive and ended up winning his third state title with a 19-11 major decision.
