Utah’s Weekend Warriors (01/10-01/12)

With the All-Star Duals looming, a lot of wrestling fans were enthralled by the selection process this week. However, there were still some All-Star level matchups across the Beehive state. Let’s take note of some great performances!

Riggin Boger (Altamont)

The Altamont freshman did a good job of breaking the bracket at 138 pounds at the Richardson Memorial. In the quarterfinals he pinned top seeded Wyoming state champion, Haze Child. From there he scored a pin in the semifinals and a 17-5 major decision in the finals.

Brady Merkley (Uintah)

Merkley had quite the run in his hometown. He won a Uintah TOC title with wins over Delta’s, Maverick Caldwell, a Wyoming state placer and a Wyoming state champion. Merkley’s season record is 30-3.

Hayes Dalton (Emery)

Dalton went 8-0 at the Battle at the Pound in Gunnison. Those wins included five falls and an upset 9-2 decision over defending 2-A state champion, Millard’s John Whitaker.

Van Bray (Northwest College)

Bray is a product of Millard High School where he was a three-time state champion. This week he competed at the NJCAA Coaches Duals. In InterMat’s last rankings poll, they ranked Bray number nine at 133 pounds. This weekend, Bray was up to 141 pounds where he went 4-1 with a win over number 6 ranked Robert Hall of Iowa Lakes.

What’s Next?

Arguably the most anticipated week of the season for the Utah wrestling community. On Tuesday, we have the All-Star Dual and then there’s the toughest tournament in Utah, The Rumble over the weekend. Should be tons of fun!
