Thursday, April 22
Friday, April 23 (Greco-Roman)
*16U (8th graders in the 16U can not wrestle Juniors) can wrestle in both the 16U and Junior Division
Saturday, April 24 (Freestyle)
*If you weigh-in and wrestle for the Greco-Roman State on Friday you do not need to weigh-in again on Saturday
*16U (8th graders in 16U can not wrestle Juniors) can wrestle in the 16U and Junior Divisions. If a 16U wants to wrestle on the Junior Dual team they must wrestle in the Junior Division at State and win the spot.
We will be using a challenge system for the 2021 Greco & Freestyle State Championships. The process is explained below:
Mat 1= Mat 1 will use a video review system along with the international challenge rules. If a coach chooses to challenge an officials decision, they will throw their block into the ring. The official will review the video. If the score changes in favor of the challenging wrestler, the coach gets their block back and maintains the right to challenge additional decisions during the match. If the score does not change in favor of the challenging wrestler, the other wrestler will receive 1 point and the challenging coach will lose their block as well as forfeit the right to challenge calls for the remainder of the match. As many finals matches as possible will be pushed to Mat 1.
Mats 2-12= The rest of the mats will use a new ticket system for challenges. The ticket system will work similarly to the block system but with a few modifications. Each head coach will be given 2 tickets for every registered wrestler from their club for that day, (can be picked up at weigh-ins). The head coach can distribute challenge tickets however they choose. In order to challenge an officials decision on the mat, a coach must call the official up to the table and present a challenge ticket to the official. The official will then hear the challenge. If the score changes in favor of the the challenging wrestler, the coach gets their ticket back. If the score does not change in favor of the challenging wrestler, the challenging coach loses the ticket. A coach can challenge as many times in a match as they want as long as they have a challenge ticket.
All wrestlers in all divisions qualify automatically for the Western Regional Championships in Farmington, Utah in May. Wrestlers can wrestle any weight class they would like at West Regionals. They can wrestle lower or higher than what they wrestled at State.
This tournament is also the official qualifying event for all Utah National Teams for 14U, 16U, and Juniors. Wrestlers must qualify at the weight at which they intend to compete at the National Duals and/or at the 16U & Junior National Championships in Fargo. The champions of the 14U and 16U win the right to be on the national teams for the national duals events. Junior division champions also win the right to represent Team Utah at the Turf War Duals. Only the top 3 placers in the 16U and Junior divisions gain automatic qualifying spots for Fargo (there are other ways to qualify for Fargo so even if you don’t place in the top 3 you will most likely be able to attend Fargo if you want to). In the event that any of the top three placers for Fargo, do not have their National Teams deposits (explained below) paid online by the national teams deposit deadline, any open spots on the national team will be open to the next highest placer in the weight class. In the event the Freestyle & Greco State Champions do not have their deposit paid online for the National Duals Teams by the deposit deadline their spot will be open for the coach to fill.
There are no challenge matches in 2021, wrestlers must wrestle the weight they want to wrestle at Fargo and the Duals.
