Before we get into the top incoming freshman let’s take a look back at how our top 10 from last year did. We had three freshman state champs in Kohler (#1), Foy (#2) and Barraclough (#4). We had 6 state placers, Wilcox (#3 placed 3rd), Lowry (#6 placed 3rd), Zorn (#7 placed 3rd), Tauteoli (#8 placed 3rd), Frost (#9 placed 2nd), and Curtis (#10 placed 3rd).

If history continues to repeat itself this crop of new talent will need to step up and produce. For the past four years the #1 ranked incoming freshman has won state and 3 out of 4 years the #2 ranked wrestler has won state as freshman.  Let’s take a look at the new 2016-2017 Top Ten Incoming Freshman!!

#1 Tyson Humpherys

School: Layton High School

Projected weight class: 113

Hard to deny the top spot when you are a 3x Youth Super State Champion and is the only freshman coming in that has placed at the Folkstyle Nationals for the past two years (3rd in 2015 and 8th in 2016). Coming in at 113 also helps as he will be competing for a state title right away.

#2 Stockton O'brien

School: Wasatch High School

Projected weight: 126lbs

Stockton is a 2x Youth Super State Champion but continues to improve each year. Placed 2nd at the Intermountain Warrior Challenge in the high school division but coming in at 126lbs is always a challenge for freshman but I think Stockton will be ready!

#3 Mason Christiansen

School: Bingham High School

Projected weight class: 160lbs

Mason is one of the elite, no doubt about that. 6x Youth Super State Champion!!!! Coming in at 160 pounds will pose a challenge but we feel through Mason's track record he will find a way and compete just fine.

#4 Kade Carlson

School: Corner Canyon High School

Projected weight class: 220lbs

As a freshman to come in at 220 pounds is not an easy task. It will be interesting to see how Kade does against the big juniors and seniors. Kade is a 4x Youth Super State Champion and won the USA Freestyle Nationals in 2015.

#5 Sammy Heywood

School: Wasatch High School

Projected weight class: 113lbs

The big question with Sammy is can he make 113 pounds. If he can, he will be ready to make an impact right away. Sammy placed 6th at the USA Folkstyle Nationals and won the Youth Super State Championships.

#6 Tyler Scheurn

School: North Summit

Projected weight class: 132lbs

Tyler is a 4x Youth Super State Champion and will look to continue his streak of state championships in the 2a division. He will be someone to watch right away and if the upperclassmen think he won't give them fits I guarantee they will be wrong.

#7 Oakley Ridge

School: Pleasant Grove

Projected weight class: 106lbs

Oakley had an up and down season last year but coming into the Pleasant Grove room with a top workout partner in Cole Zorn, Ridge will be ready to compete for a state title in February. Every point could matter for Pleasant Grove at the state tournament and they will rely heavily on Oakley to get them going.

#8 Mason Denton

School: Fremont

Projected weight class: 106lbs

Mason had a great season last year and capped it off with a Youth Super State title. He will now take the next step and try to replicate that season at the high school level. He will be pushed from our #10 on the list for a varsity spot but both him and Clark could be in the running for a 5A state title.

#9 Ryker Boyce

School: Desert Hills

Projected weight class: 106lbs

Ryker won a state title in 2015 but fell short last year losing to Denton. Again in 2017 Boyce will look to recapture that state title in the 3A division and should be one of the favorites going into the season. Boyce is tall and lanky and he knows how to use his height which will give a lot of wrestlers fits at the smaller weight class.

#10 Brayden Clark

School: Fremont High School

Projected weight class: 106lbs

Clark will be battling every day with Denton in the room and if he can get up to weight he will be tough to deal with. If Clark doesn't get the varsity spot he will be one of the toughest JV wrestlers in the state and whether he ends up varsity or not he will still have his eyes set on a state title in February.

Others to watch

Carson Sheets (Grand - 120lbs), Wyatt Hone (Payson - 113lbs), Jeremy Evans (Viewmont - 113lbs), Jarett Jorgensen (Morgan, 106lbs), Heston Wood (120lbs), Jacob Jackson (Delta - 132lbs), John Whitaker (Millard - 145lbs), Dean Thompson (Altamont - 106lbs), Tucker Naccarato (Payson - 138lbs), Joe Richardson (Juan Diego - 132lbs)
