Only 3 1/2 months until the High School wrestling season starts up again......For all the High School wrestling junkies out there we wanted to give you something to chew on during these long 3 1/2 months.  We will be previewing high school teams around the state for the upcoming 2016-2017 season. This will give you an in depth look into which teams will be the favorites going into next season. What teams have the strongest classes coming in and which teams may surprise. This is our best prediction so weights may be off and if we are missing kids feel free to let us know in the comments below!

We start off with one of the best teams in the state.....Wasatch!

Returning State Placers: 8

  • Trevor Cluff (1st @ 113)
  • Zak Kohler (1st @ 120)
  • Corbin Smith (1st @ 132)
  • Steven Ballif (4th @ 138)
  • Seth Gardner (2nd @ 145)
  • Jakob Discher (1st @ 152)
  • DJ Cohen (2nd @ 160)
  • Ritchie Heywood (1st @ 170)

Returning State Qualifiers: 15

Impact Freshman (and sophomores if they stayed down last year) & projected weight

  • Stockton O'brien: 126 - 2016 Youth Super State Champion
  • Sammy Heywood: 113/120 - 2016 Youth Super State Champion
  • Brock Lloyd: 152 - 2016 Youth Super State Runner-up
  • Treyson Davis: 106 - 2016 Youth Super State 5th
  • Ben Provost: 220 - 2016 Youth Super State 3rd
  • Declan Kelley: 106

Possible line-up

106: Preston Blotter (So.) State Qualifier, Mitchell Slack (So.) State Qualifier, Declan Kelley (Fr.) or Treyson Davis (Fr.)

113: Sammy Heywood (Fr.) Youth State Champion

120: Trevor Cluff (Sr.) - State Champion

*We could see Cluff at 113 and Heywood at 120 but either way I would expect one to be at each weight.

126: Stockton O'brien (Fr.) - Youth State Champion

132: Zak Kohler (So.) - State Champion

138: Corbin Smith (Sr.) - State Champion

145: Steven Ballif (Sr.) - State 4th place

152: Seth Gardner (Jr.) - State Runner-up

160: Jakob Discher (Sr.) - State Champion

170: Ritchie Heywood (Sr.) - State Champion

182: DJ Cohen (Jr.) - State Runner-up

195: Wylder Smith (Jr.) - State Qualifier

220: Bob Schick (Jr.) or Ben Provost (So.)

285: Jason Arnold (Sr.)

This line up is for sure not set. Very possible to see Cohen up at 195 and Heywood up to 182 with Gardner up to 170. Gardner would be a small 170 as of now though. Bailiff also could be at 152 and Smith at 145 which would open up 138. A lot has yet to be decided but one thing is for sure, this will be a dominant team and I see them as the top team to start the season in all classifications.
