Our second team preview will be with one of the best teams in the state for the past forever.....Pleasant Grove! This is our best prediction so weights may be off and if we are missing kids feel free to let us know in the comments below!

Returning State Placers: 6

  • Cole Zorn (3rd)
  • Anthony Ridge (5th in 2015)
  • Derek Fisher (3rd)
  • Kade Zorn (4th)
  • Maika Tauteoli (3rd)
  • Brandon Closson (3rd)

Returning State Qualifiers: 10

Impact Freshman & expected weight

  • Oakley Ridge - 106 (2016 Youth Super State runner-up)
  • Morgan Orum - 120 (injured in 2016 - 2015 Youth Super State 4th)
  • Teagan Ludwig - 152 (2016 Youth Super State Runner-up)
  • Spencer Hales (So.) - 170 (2016 Youth Super State 4th)
  • Philip Boban - 220 (2016 Northern State 3rd)

Pleasant Grove with one of the best feeder programs in the state will once again add an immediate impact wrestler in Oakley Ridge, combine that with 6 returning state placers who all could be in the hunt for a title and you might just add a 7th straight state title. They, surprisingly enough, don't have the most returning points (Layton does), but until someone proves they can beat them they will be the front runners again in 2016-2017. They could have some holes in their line up based on how the team spreads out but If they can they will be tough to beat in duals. With 7 Freshman and Sophomores possibly starting they will be young but if they can pull off a win this year at state they look to be very good for years to come!

Big boys typically can score big points in tournaments and duals and the Vikings once again will be dominant in the upper weights with Tauteoli, Closson and Wilkinson. Closson is a pinning machine and will likely score 6 points most every time he walks on the mat in Utah. If Tauteoli and Wilkinson continue to improve that could be 18 points every time those three come on the mat.

The negative to the PG team this year could be the depth. They are very solid in their starting line up but will they have the depth to capture their 7th straight title?

Possible line-up

106: Oakley Ridge (Fr.) - 2016 Youth Super State Champion

113: Cole Zorn (So.) - 2016 State 3rd place

120: Anthony Ridge (Jr.) - 2015 State 5th place

126: Derek Fisher (Sr.) - 2016 State 3rd place

132: Kade Zorn (Jr.) - 2016 State 4th place

138: Nick Lund (Jr.) or Luis Garcia (Jr.) - 2016 State Qualifier

145: Jaxon Moore (So.) - 2016 State Qualifier

152: Teagan Ludwig (Fr.) - 2016 Youth Super State Runner up

160: Mac Dodson (So.)

170: Traven Hansen (Jr.) - 2016 State Qualifier

182: Dylan Payne (Jr.)

195: Maika Tauteoli (So.) - 2016 State 3rd place

220: Brandon Closson (Sr.) - 2016 State 3rd place

285: Keegan Wilkinson (So.) - 2016 State Qualifier

Some other possibilities would be that neither Ridge or Fisher can make 120 and things become pretty packed for the Vikings between 126 and 138. If neither can make 120 that would open up a spot for freshman Morgan Orum to come in and start right away. Closson and Tauteoli could be at heavy and 220 which would open up 195. The Vikings have a bunch of talent but the biggest question mark going into the season is if they can spread that talent out to fill the line up.
